Vocal lengthening of the vowel ‘fatha’ for 6 counts (special cases, e.g. at the end of Surah Al-Fatiha).
● Green
Ghunna (nasalisation): the sound passes through the nasal cavity, always for 2 counts.
● Grey
Silent letter: read as if it does not exist and move on to the next (except when followed by a ghunna).
● Navy Blue
Qalqala (explosive vibration of the letter when it carries a sukūn or is the last of the verse). The 5 letters: ﺏ ﺩ ﺝ ﻁ ﻕ. Example: ‘Ibrāhīm’ is pronounced ‘i-be-rōhīm’.
● Orange
Variable lengthening (2 to 4 counts, up to 6). The orange letter is often the second-to-last of the verse; this lengthening beautifies and softens the recitation.
● Dark Blue
Emphatic letter (the back of the tongue rises towards the palate to produce a deep ‘heavy’ sound). Example: اللَّهُ is pronounced ‘A-LLŌH’ (the A of Lām slightly drifts toward ‘O’ as the back of the tongue rises).
